2026 – Pause & Listen

Pause & Listen

This year, the European Music Therapy Day invites us to pause and listen.

Sometimes, all we need is a moment to just halt, to breathe, to slow down and just notice. Notice what is happening within us, around us, and between us…

Pause and listen to yourself

In the middle of everyday life, how often do we really take the time to notice how we are doing? What is happening in our body? Which emotions are present? What do we need right now? Taking a moment to pause —or to be simply still. We can create space to become aware of ourselves and our surroundings. Music can support us in this: a sound, a rhythm, a melody, or even a moment of silence can invite us to turn our attention inward and listen to what is already there.

Pause and listen to others

What happens when we give another person our full presence? When we are not already thinking about what to say next, but simply make space for what the other person wants to share? Notice the people around you, your colleagues, friends, family, clients, or even someone you have never met before. Give someone time to speak. Give yourself time to truly hear them. Soak up the connections that emerge when we allow ourselves to be fully present with another person. As music therapists, we know that listening can sometimes go beyond words.

Pause and listen to your environment

What do you hear when you stop for a moment and listen to the world around you? The sounds of a city, birds in a tree, wind moving through the leaves, footsteps, water, voices, or silence. Perhaps you can find a beautiful place and simply sit there for a while. Close your eyes. Listen. Let yourself be inspired by the sounds around you. Our environments are full of music, if we take the time to hear it.

Pause and listen to music

Choose a piece of music and give it your full attention. Not as background, not while doing something else but just simply listen. Notice what you hear, what you feel, what memories or images arise. Notice your body. Notice the spaces between the sounds.

These different ways of listening are connected. Listening to ourselves, listening to others, listening to our environment, and listening to music can all invite us to slow down, become more aware, create connection, and maybe discover something new when we just pause and listen.
