Filippo Giordano, Country Representative for Italy, has some exciting news to share. After a long legislative process and consultations at national level, a year earlier than planned, four new PhD programs in Music Therapy will begin in the 2024-2025 academic year at four conservatories.
The first two programs are part of the national PhD program focused on Music Therapy and Neuroscience:
Antonio Vivaldi Conservatory of Alessandria
This research will be “linked to themes concerning women’s reproductive and maternal mental health, as well as parental support, with particular attention to the building of early bonds between the newborn and attachment figures, especially the mother.”

This research will be “linked to themes on the methods and outcomes of music therapy on neurological and psychological aspects in pediatric hospital settings.”

Two more PhD programs will be offered in Palermo and Verona:
Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Palermo
This program is entitled “Teaching socio-cultural inclusion through music and music therapy in an educational context.”

The research project here is entitled “Between body and cognition: the effects of music therapy on physiological and pathological aging” and will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Verona.

Regarding the significance of this achievement, Filippo said,
“This is wonderful news! After many years of persistent negotiation and diligent collaboration, public training in music therapy finally gets a great opportunity with the third level of scientific-artistic research.”
Elide Scarlata, EMTC President and former country representative for Italy, said,
“The establishment of this doctoral training focused on the application of music therapy in various contexts is an important step in fostering the development of research and enriching the training of music therapists in Italy and other European countries.”
