On Saturday 13th June 2026, EMTC Vice-President, Dr. Rachel Swanick, led a free online training session designed to support music therapists in developing a deeper understanding of the intersection between mental health and neurodiversity.

It explored how diverse neurological profiles such as autism, ADHD, and other cognitive differences shape individuals’ emotional experiences, communication styles, and therapeutic needs.

Participants engaged with contemporary, neuro-affirming approaches to practice, emphasizing strengths-based perspectives and person-centred care. The training also examined common mental health challenges experienced by neurodivergent individuals, including anxiety, depression, and trauma, and how these may present differently within this population.

Through a combination of theory, case discussion, and practical music-based interventions, attendees built confidence in adapting their therapeutic work to be more inclusive, responsive, and ethically grounded. Key themes included sensory processing, regulation, identity, and the therapeutic relationship.

By the end of the session, participants had gained enhanced tools and insights to support neurodivergent clients’ mental health and wellbeing through music therapy in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and empowering.
