Discover more about Music Therapy in Luxembourg

In the 1970s some pioneers started introducing music therapy mostly in the field of work with mentally handicaped children.

Definition of music therapy adopted by the members of GML: Music therapy consists in using music to further, to develop and to re-establish people’s physical and mental balance. It mobilises resources and its aim is to optimise the quality of life through dealing with problems on a different level or through supporting a healing process.

As a non-verbal means of expression and communication, music appeals to people’s emotions; it stimulates cognitive as well as social and creative abilities, which will in turn allow the person to deal with the conflicts and challenges in life. Due to the different parameters of music, music therapy, whether active and/or receptive, generates intra-psychic and relational processes. According to the respective need, a qualified music therapist approaches these processes in verbal or non-verbal, in individual or group therapy sessions. Music therapy is a form of psychotherapy. Depending on the various schools and on the music therapist’s own training, the methods used will be based on psychodynamic, behavioural, systemic, holistic-humanist and integrative concepts.

There is one music therapy association in Luxembourg:
Gesellschaft fir Musiktherapie zu Lëtzebuerg (GML) a.s.b.l.

Founded in March 2004, the association is composed of professionals from various psycho-social backgrounds as well as people willing to promote music therapy in Luxembourg. Its main objective is the promotion and recognition of music therapy in Luxembourg.

The GML uses various means to achieve that goal. In particular it:

  • gives information about music therapy, training courses and fields of action
  • promotes exchange between music therapists and interdisciplinary exchange
  • organizes conferences, collaborates with international organizations
  • supports projects and promotes research

Since 2006 the GML has been a member of the European Music Therapy Confederation, this membership being considered as a priority.

This definition of music therapy, minimal standards for music therapy qualification and a code of ethics once accepted, a music therapy register for Luxembourg, the GMLR could be operationalized in 2012. https://www.musiktherapie.lu/page/gmlr-63636

A GMLR commission is in place to examine the candidatures once a year in October. This is an important step in the process of public and governmental recognition of music therapy and the profession of music therapist. There is no statutory recognition and juridicial regulation yet for music therapy and it is not covered by health insurance.

A small but growing professional community meets at events organized by the GML: seminars, group supervision, intervision, meetings for interdisciplinary exchange, public conferences and study days. The work on the recognition process continues constantly in parallel with all the afore mentioned activities.

There is no music therapy training program in Luxembourg. Students study music therapy as well as many other disciplines abroad, in Germany, France, UK, The Netherlands
